The New (Retrospective)
Retrospective: An exhibition or compilation showing the development of the work of a particular artist over a period of time.
This body of work serves as a retrospective of my time using film, beginning more than a year ago, and featuring some of the first prints I’ve ever made. Using collage as a medium, the goal was to create something entirely new, made entirely of the old. As so, old prints were cut, combined, and brought together to make fresh experiences.
The work also seeks to explore new methods of presentation. Each collage and matte is a puzzle piece, putting them together in the correct orientation eventually creates a silhouette. This is to embolden the meaning of the phrase “body of work”, in which the works are actually becoming a body of some sorts. The techniques and methods of presentation were directly inspired by the artists Maria Antelman and Anna Oystoya. Antelman’s method of mounting and presenting her works, as well as the compositional techniques of Osystoya, and her use of vertical and horizontal striations.
All of this comes together to create something that is new yet old, traditional yet contemporary, and entirely contradictory in its design.
